A Time for Change

It has been over a year since I launched Earth Matters Apothecary and all is going well. The line has been picked up by a few Spas and I’m really enjoying he online aspect. It has given me the opportunity to meet and correspond with lots of people who, like us, are concerned with the environment….their own and the planet’s.

In the news today, once we moved past the poisonous political headlines, there was the dreadful story of the methane gas leak near LA. This never ending disaster has been going on since October. Residents of the area are suffering. Many are sick, entire neighborhoods have been vacated and a state of emergency has been declared. But apparently there is nothing that can be done for another 3-to 4 months. In other words, no turn off switch but a lot more asthma, emergency room visits and disrupted lives.

A rep from the gas company informed us that natural gas did not make people sick.

No, but it can suffocate us. Methane is the 2nd worst greenhouse gas. See Time Magazine’s article here.

Another environmental disaster is in the news. In Flint, Michigan, toxic drinking water heavy in lead has sickened hundreds.

Our inner and outer environments are intrinsically linked. It’s difficult to stay healthy when the air we breathe and the water we drink are not.

The good news is we are not powerless. We can fight back and whether it’s shopping at green markets, joining a beach clean up, composting, recycling, carpooling, avoiding plastics, supporting local environmental groups or at the voting booth, we can make a difference.

We can be the change we want to see.

The earth matters.
